Join Counterpoint’s First Study Group
Counterpoint is pleased to announce a new initiative: member-led study groups exploring topics related to aging in Japan.
Our first study group will examine inheritance law and inheritance taxation in Japan.

What we’ll do

Read the book
We’ll begin with W. M. Penn’s engaging collection of stories, Inheriting the Japanese Way: Who Gets What and Why. It is available from Amazon.co.jp for ¥1,485 in paperback or ¥630 on Kindle. -
Gather members’ questions
Participants can submit questions prompted by the book, as well as broader questions about inheritance law and taxation that the book may not cover. Please email your questions with the subject line: Inheritance Study Group -
Hear from the author
Kathleen Morikawa, who writes as W. M. Penn, has kindly agreed to answer our questions about the book. -
Meet and discuss
We’ll meet on Zoom to discuss the book and the author’s responses, then decide together which issues we would like to investigate further. -
Share what we learn
If we feel we have learned enough, we may prepare a report for the Counterpoint website. If further research is needed, we’ll develop and carry out a plan of action.
