Event: International Retirement Migration: How, When, and Where Should I Retire? (Online)

Contact Amanda for the Zoom link.

Date: January 22 (Thursday) 20:00-21:00

Speaker: Kristie Collins

Outline: Kristie Collins ' long-imagined retirement would entail splitting time between her Canadian homeland and taking on gender advisor contracts (CUSO, WUSC, CECI) in developing nations. This would allow her to spend time with family and friends, to qualify for Canadian healthcare, and to continue doing meaningful work. With rising costs of living in Canada, however, and a continued attachment to her life in Japan, she found herself wondering if there might be more—and potentially better— retirement paths available. This talk will explore trends in international retirement migration (IRM) and consider ways to bridge multiple ‘homes’ in retirement.

Bio: Kristie Collins is an Associate Professor at Reitaku University in Chiba, Japan. She is originally from Prince Edward Island, Canada, and she has lived and worked in Japan for nearly 25 years. In addition to teaching Gender Studies and Media & Gender, she also teaches her hometown classic, Anne of Green Gables, to students in the Faculty of Foreign Studies.

Counterpoint retreat in December Plans --  Postponed to Spring 2026!

Thank you to those who showed interest in our retreat. After careful consideration, we are  postponing the retreat to the spring. We needed more time to come up with activities that would suit all the people who signed up.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are planning a 5-day retreat (Mon–Fri) in the first or second week of December at a temple in the Okazaki area in Kyoto. The temple has a delightful space for workshops and other activities, a beautiful garden, and offers overnight accommodation for people who wish to stay there. Our plan is for people to join a creative writing workshop in the mornings and a relaxing, skill-building session in the afternoons (yoga, making Japanese sweets (wagashi), etc.). There will also be plenty of time for socializing. People living in Kyoto need not stay overnight unless they want to!

Please fill out this survey for us to get an idea of the level of interest for such a retreat.

You will not be committing yourself to anything yet!
